If you’ve taken home cornmeal, polenta, or grits f If you’ve taken home cornmeal, polenta, or grits from Artisan Milling Co. (previously sold under Riverview Farms), you’ve tasted more than beautifully milled grain - you’ve tasted 50+ years of soil stewardship, family history, and serious attention to detail.

Long before it was trendy, @riverview_farms were building soil fertility, avoiding persistent fertilizers and pesticides, and protecting the Coosawattee River with vegetative buffer zones.

Back in the 1970s, Brad’s father, Carter Swancy, was already resisting persistent fertilizers and pesticides, even while selling corn and hogs on commodity markets. When commodity prices for both corn and pork dropped sharply in the late 1990s, the farm faced a serious crossroads.

The second generation pivoted to certified organic production - and everything changed.

They began selling direct to consumers at farmers markets, launched a CSA, and reintroduced pork - this time focusing on flavorful heritage breeds that chefs were actively seeking. That shift didn’t just save the farm. It reshaped its future.

Today, they continue that legacy with organic and regenerative practices, vertical tillage to protect soil ecosystems, and a zero-waste milling process - even composting milling byproducts back into the fields. Plastics are avoided whenever possible in packaging and shipping.

What should you try first?

“Grits. Always the grits.”

Their pound-for-pound assorted boxes make it easy to try everything - including white and yellow corn grown at Riverview and specialty grains like Bloody Butcher Corn from Sequatchie Cove Farm.

And don’t miss the tried and true recipes on their website artisanmillingco.com

What’s the best addition to your next salad? Water What’s the best addition to your next salad? Watercress! 🌱

Stem & Stipe recently brought wild foraged watercress to the market - it’s a cruciferous vegetable that grows in water. This peppery, aquatic green is in the mustard family and tastes similar to arugula but with a more mild bite.

Beyond its flavor, watercress is a nutritional powerhouse. Registered dietitian nutritionist BreAnn Erickson of the Digestive Health Institute says that its high levels of vitamins A, C, and K support everything from bone health and blood clotting to vision and immune function.

As for how to enjoy it, Logan from Stem & Stipe recommends it fresh in salads, juiced, or as a garnish - and says it makes a wonderful soup too!

Stay tuned to @stem.and.stipe’s Instagram to keep up with their foraging finds each week and pre-order the best addition to your next salad this week (if available).
